PRE-REQUISITES/REQUIREMENTS:
Before participating in this course participants will be expected
to have written a short (one page maximum) summary of the area of
research/work on which they wish to be interviewed so that the tutor can
make the interview as realistic as possible. The tutor will provide
guidance on this before the course.

AIMS:
Underlying the course is the idea that language and how we use it is
central to any media interview. The specific medium – print, radio,
television – is less important than understanding how to explain
something well to a general audience or to put across an argument
coherently and without being diverted.

INTENDED OUTCOMES + BENEFITS:
This course will equip participants to explain what they do – verbally
and on paper – in a way which is understandable to the general public
and would form the basis for further publicity through the media. It
will provide a very brief background to the media, moving on to deal
with language and what is appropriate in a media interview.

CONTENT:
The following will be covered:
• Brief introduction to the media
• What to do when a journalist rings
• How the University’s Press Office can help you
• Dos and don’ts
• Jargon busting, common clichés and how to avoid them
• How language can clarify or obfuscate meaning
• Making complex subjects understandable for the public
• A discussion and critique of participants’ summaries
• Interview techniques
• Radio interviews with each participant (about their summaries)
• Review and second interview.

As a result of the course participants will:
• Be capable of taking part in a general interview on a subject
familiar to them and be able to explain their work succinctly and
clearly without using clichés and inappropriate jargon;
• Understand the work of the University’s Press Office helping them
publicise their work and raise awareness of the University and its
strengths.

LEARNING & TEACHING METHOD:
It will include practical work in writing and being interviewed on the
basis of short summaries written before the course.

TUTOR:
Diana Muir is a print journalist, TV director and producer, media
trainer and consultant.
