Pre-requisites: none.
Pre-work: based on guidance supplied, each participant will prepare in
advance a 4-minute micro presentation and will deliver this during the
course. Filming of presentations is optional and constructive feedback
is provided.
Overall Aim:
This course will help you to prepare and deliver clear and concise oral
research presentations in both formal and informal environments.
Intended Outcomes:
As a result you will be better able to identify and utilise the core
skills necessary to present research material in an effective and
influential style and to deal with questions and objections effectively.
Indicative Content:
The course will cover the following areas: key factors to consider when
presenting data orally; tips for preparation; managing the environment
effectively; research presentation structure and form; titles, starts
and finishes; stagecraft - body language, movement, gesture; the art of
oral summary - speaking from a paper; speaking rate and timing - filling
your slot accurately; the role of visual aids - three models; dealing
with questions, hostility and objections; the role of the chairperson -
eliciting assistance; how to rehearse effectively and efficiently. A
combination of trainer input, demonstration and practical, structured
exercises will be used to explore the above strategies.

Richard initially trained as a teacher but has spent most of his
professional life working within the field of human resources and
training and development. He is a widely respected training and
development specialist and HR adviser who regularly lectures at a number
of universities and also writes on soft skills and HR policy. He is
responsible for the strategic management of the consultancy and
specialises in training/curriculum design and the delivery of courses
and workshops. Richard is a Chartered Member of The Chartered
Institute of Personnel and Development, and holds a masters degree in
human resource management, as well as being a qualified trainer and
