Description
Please read the University of Leeds policy on tackling accent bias in
advance of the session. We estimate that this will take around 5
minutes. You may also like to look at the All Accents Welcome staff
intranet page.

Experiences of students at University vary widely depending on their
backgrounds and personal circumstances. One often overlooked factor is
accent bias, which can negatively affect students’ confidence,
participation, sense of belonging, and overall wellbeing.

In this session we will focus on how we can use Academic Personal Tutor
(APT) relationships to support all students in ways that recognise their
diversity of backgrounds and identities, and the potential impact of
biases and inequalities on their academic life. There will be time to
reflect on our own practices as APTs and share good practice with
colleagues.

The focus on accent bias within this session will enable participants to
develop a mindset for anticipating difference without judgement.

Session aims:

Develop awareness of accent bias as a factor affecting belonging,
success, and student experience.

Discuss how we might adopt an inclusive approach to supporting students.

Engage with colleagues across disciplines and reflect on your own
practice as an APT.
