Description

This course will take place online.

Starting a PhD is an exciting but significant transition. This
interactive workshop is designed to support postgraduate researchers at
the beginning of their doctoral journey by helping you understand what
it means to become a researcher, develop confidence in your new role,
and make the most of the opportunities available at the University of
Leeds.

Through a series of interactive activities and guided reflection, you
will explore your emerging researcher identity, reflect on your values
and strengths, and consider how these can shape your approach to
doctoral study. You will also discover the people, communities and
development opportunities available to support you throughout your PhD,
helping you develop a sense of belonging within the University's
research community. There will be opportunities to connect with other
new postgraduate researchers, share experiences, and identify practical
strategies for navigating the early stages of your doctorate.

The workshop concludes with reflection and action planning, enabling you
to identify practical next steps for your development and begin your
doctoral journey with confidence.

As a result of attending, you will be able to:

• Describe what it means to become a postgraduate researcher.

• Reflect on your emerging researcher identity, values and strengths.

• Identify opportunities to connect with research communities, support
networks and development opportunities across the University.

• Recognise key services, resources and expectations that will support
your transition into doctoral study.

• Develop an action plan to support your ongoing development and help
you make the most of your PhD.
