Description

This course will take place online.

How can you enhance the confidence and attainment of the diverse student
body in your School? This workshop explores the embedding of academic
language and literacy work in disciplinary teaching as one possible
means. In the session you will reflect on an assessment from a module
you teach or supporting learning on, to identify opportunities for
explicit awareness raising of expected ‘products’ and processes. You
will also consider ‘quick wins’ and practical ways of bringing academic
literacy development into module teaching and learning support. The
session will offer useful thinking tools for your pedagogic
practice, tools that can also be used for bigger picture programme,
module, and teaching planning and design.

In preparation for the session, please:
• Identify a module you teach or support learning on (e.g.) where you
feel students could be doing better on the assessment.
• Select an example of a (strong) passing piece of student work on this
module and bring it along to the session (either printed or digital, but
ensure it is anonymised and that you have the permission to bring it)
• Bring a copy of the module overview (or be able to access it via
Minerva)
