Aims:

Preparing to Teach at Leeds is an optional, non-assessed workshop for
postgraduate researchers (PGRs) at the University of Leeds — primarily
aimed at those who want to teach but have not yet done so. Where
Foundations in Teaching (FiT) builds on real teaching experience, this
workshop instead draws on participants' experience as learners
themselves, and their wider professional and life experience, to build
confidence and a clear sense of professional identity and values before
they step into a teaching space for the first time.

Content and format:

The workshop covers: professional identity, values, and expectations —
what it means to become a teacher at Leeds, and the boundaries and
professional conduct expected of PGR tutors; practical confidence in
teaching spaces — functioning in seminars, labs, tutorials, and
fieldwork, and handling common early-career challenges such as starting
sessions confidently and managing participation; and wellbeing,
resources, and next steps, and how this workshop connects to the wider
teaching development pathway, including FiT and further CPD. By the end,
participants will have a clearer sense of their role and identity as a
PGR teacher, greater confidence approaching teaching for the first time,
and a clear understanding of where to find further support. This is a
face-to-face session, held on campus.
