This course is for staff who are new to the role of internal examiner
for research degrees at the University of Leeds. The training consists
of two parts, and both must be completed before an individual’s
appointment as an internal examiner can be confirmed. The first part is
an online course, available at any time through Learning Pool (details
will be sent via email). This workshop is the second part of the
training.
This is an interactive workshop, with participation and discussion
expected. Please join with your microphone enabled and dial in from a
space where you can contribute to discussions.

Description
Aim of Training:
As part of the University’s quality assurance processes, the Graduate
Board requires all new internal examiners of research degrees at Leeds
to complete this training before acting as an internal examiner.
This workshop focuses on the practical aspects of the role, including
applying University policies and procedures, exercising academic
judgement and preparing for and conducting a fair and consistent viva.
Through discussion of case studies and scenarios, participants will have
the opportunity to explore potential challenges, consider different
approaches and reflect on their practice with colleagues.
Participants must complete the online course before attending this
workshop.
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
Identify the responsibilities of an internal examiner for a research
degree at Leeds.
Explain the requirements for reporting the outcome of a research degree
examination.
Apply the University’s policies and procedures when preparing for,
conducting, and concluding a viva.
Produce clear, evidence-based examiner documentation (e.g. preliminary
report, joint examiners’ report) in line with University expectations.
Tutors:
The course is delivered by members of the Progression and Examinations
Group, which is responsible for research degree examination policies and
procedures, including the appointment of examiners, and facilitated by
OD&PL.
