Description

This workshop is one of the Developing Your Teaching workshops,
provision from the Student Education Development Team.

This course will take place on campus.

At the University of Leeds, student cohorts are becoming increasingly
diverse, in terms of educational, linguistic and social backgrounds.
This diversity is undoubtedly beneficial for learning, but it could be
cognitively demanding. What this means is that how learners from
different language backgrounds experience accessing and communicating
knowledge in the language of the learning environment can impact their
success, degree of engagement with content and classmates, relationships
and trust and senses of belonging.

In this session, we will unpack the notion of "cognitive load" from the
perspectives of different participants in the academic linguistic
ecosystem. We will consider a number of practical approaches to
supporting and developing the learning of students in linguistically
diverse cohorts, whilst ensuring they remain intellectually challenged
and thriving in the Leeds academic community.
