COURSE DESCRIPTION
Our fieldwork safety programme is designed to compliment discipline-
specific training provided to PGR students and new staff. It will
include a 12-hour outdoor first aid certificate and fieldwork safety
components.
SYLLABUS
The syllabus for the course is made up of a small amount of pre-reading
and an intensive two-day, two-night programme of face-to-face
delivery.
The following elements are covered in prereading but may be recapped in
practical scenarios and group discussions:
• Principles of First Aid
• Vital Signs
• Incident Management
• Dealing with Unresponsive Casualties
• Adult CPR
• Choking
• Shock
• Simple injuries & illnesses
• Common Outdoor Injuries
• Common illnesses & medical conditions
• Water Margins & Drowining
• Remote Area First Aid
Practical elements from these topics will be picked up during face-to-
face training.
In addition to these first aid elements, the following fieldwork safety
elements will be covered:
• Dynamic risk assessment & HSE hierarchy of control
• Basic Water Margin Management
• Basic navigation using physical and/or digital mapping
• Group management and leadership
• Emergency procedures for UK-based fieldwork
• University of Leeds Fieldwork Guidance
• Practical scenario-based learning
Cost of course is based upon a maximum of 12 people per course and works
out at just £250 per person.
