Description
WHAT IS NVIVO?
NVivo is a qualitative data analysis software that helps researchers
organise, manage, and visualise data such as interviews transcripts,
open-ended survey responses, journal articles, social media and web
content.
COURSE FORMAT:
This 3 hr online course (2 x 1.5hr sessions) is tutor led and provides
a comprehensive overview of NVivo fundamentals.
NVivo for home use can be accessed via the web-based portal
AppsAnywhere. Please see the following article:
https://it.leeds.ac.uk/it?id=kb_article&sysparm_article=KB0014827 for
how to download the software and https://it.leeds.ac.uk/it?
id=kb_article&sysparm_article=KB0014759 for FAQs. NVivo for windows can
also be accessed free via WVD and on University campus IT clusters.
PREREQUISITES:
It is desirable if participants have some understanding of qualitative
data collection and analysis methodology. The training does not cover
research methodologies.
NVIVO FOR WINDOWS AND NVIVO FOR MAC
The training covers NVivo 14 for Windows only. It does not cover
NVivo for mac. This course uses the Windows version of NVivo. Mac users
can take part but the steps and commands may be slightly different.
There will not be enough time in the session for the tutor to cover both
versions. Please visit the NVivo website for more specific advice on the
MacOS version.
OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING
This 3-hour training, broken down into 1.5 hour online sessions provides
a comprehensive overview of NVivo fundamentals. It covers creating an
NVivo project, importing and organising data, creating thematic and case
nodes and coding data at these nodes.
The data used during the training comes from the ‘Volunteering Study’
which looked at the people’s experiences and motivations when doing
volunteering work. The data consists of a range of files (Text, video,
audio, pictures, field notes and attributes). Using this data,
participants will become familiar with the NVivo interface,
functionality, and its various tools. Participants will be guided by the
tutor when performing common tasks. After completing a task,
participants will be given the opportunity to exercise individually.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
• Create a new project, understand the NVivo Interface
• Bring in interview transcripts, literature, pictures, videos, audios,
web content and learn how to work with the imported files
• Handle your ideas using Memos, Annotations, See Also Links, and
Hyperlinks
• Create thematic nodes then Code files and manage codes
• Organize demographic data to keep track of demographic attributes such
as age, gender to be used as a basis for comparisons
DURATION: 3 hrs (2 x 1.5hr online sessions). Participants must attend
both sessions to complete the course.
COST: Free of charge
