Description
Are you new to academic personal tutoring at Leeds? This session will
consider key aspects of the academic personal tutor role at the
University of Leeds such as:

- Purpose and boundaries of the role
- Referrals and signposting
- Facilitating student sense of belonging as a tutor
- Resources/support for academic personal tutors

The second part of the session will be a Q and A providing an
opportunity to explore the role, have honest discussions and respond to
queries you may have. Please note that this session is intended to sit
alongside the induction and support provided within your
School/Department.

This session will be held online via MS Teams.

Session Aims

This session aims to support colleagues new to academic personal
tutoring at Leeds by exploring key information and aspects of the role.
- Reflect on the purpose of APT
- Explore the boundaries of the role, including making referrals and
signposting
- Consider facilitating student sense of belonging as a tutor
- Identify resources/support for academic personal tutors.

Outcomes:
- Identify the key elements of the University of Leeds’ approach to
academic personal tutoring
- Reflect on your experience of academic personal tutoring (or your
anticipated experiences in the role) and your approach to it
- Be able to locate further information and resources to support you in
your role as an APT

Pre-course work

We would like participants to contribute to a Padlet prior to the
session. The link for this will be sent to you via email prior to the
session.

About the tutors

Rachael O’Connor is a Lecturer, Director of Student Support and Academic
Personal Tutor Lead in the School of Law. Rachael is currently
conducting a fellowship with the Leeds Institute of Teaching Excellence
relating to academic personal tutoring experiences (particularly
experiences of under-represented students) and her scholarship work
focuses on mentoring and authentic staff/student relationships.


Dr Kate Richardson is an Academic Development Consultant in OD&PL. Kate
works with colleagues across the institution to develop student
education practice and has been an academic personal tutor for 15 years.
