Description

This session is for both new and experienced APTs and will be held
online via MS Teams.

We will explore the topic of building authentic relationships with
students. We will consider what might be meant by the term
‘authenticity’ in the context of higher education and APT more
specifically, given it is often listed/cited as a key attribute of
effective APT.

There will be discussion around the potential benefits of authenticity
and how it connects to APT practice. We will also consider some of the
challenges we face as students and staff in engaging authentically and
will have opportunity to consider how to develop our own practice to
embrace authenticity on our own terms.

Session Aims

This session aims to support colleagues (APTs) to build more authentic
relationships with students in a way that is meaningful to colleagues as
individuals.

Outcomes

- Discuss what we might mean by ‘authenticity’ in APT and why it is
important

- Consider the benefits and potential challenges of being authentic in
APT from both the staff and student perspectives

- Engage with colleagues from across disciplines involved in APT to
consider a diverse range of perspectives on authentic APT relationships

- Reflect on your practice to identify ways to build more authentic
relationships with your own tutees and/or to influence/support
colleagues to do the same.
