Suitability
For PGR supervisors, DoPGRSs,academic and support staff involved in PGR
development who are interested in extending their practical
intercultural* skills in order to facilitate more inclusive and
productive working partnerships.
This course will take place on campus.
*Whilst focussing particularly on working with international PGRs, this
session is underpinned by a broad understanding of ‘intercultural’, to
include working across different disciplinary cultures; and mediating
the varying cultures PGRs from non-traditional backgrounds bring into
the Academy.

Description
Overall Aim of the Course:
This session provides a space to explore the different cultural
assumptions and expectations the various participants in the PhD
endeavour bring to the experience; and to consider strategies to bridge
these. Whilst not excluding reference to theory, the focus will be
firmly on practice.
Outcomes and Benefits:
In this session, you can expect to:
- gain greater awareness of your own assumptions and expectations
of (working with) PGRs
- gain greater awareness of assumptions and expectations PGRs may
bring to PhD study
- become more familiar with practical approaches, tactics etc. to
manage and minimise misunderstandings and mismatches of expectations
- extend your cultural agility to work more effectively in an
increasingly diverse HE community
