Description
With Professor Kay Sambell and Professor Sally Brown

For decades, many universities have recognised that assessment can be
more than just a summative endpoint to learning, that it can be an
integral part of the process by which students develop knowledge, skills
and capabilities. In this online workshop, professors Kay Sambell and
Sally Brown will argue that authentic assessment, which goes well beyond
employability, can be transformative. Building on their research and
publications on Assessment for Learning and, most recently, their
endeavours to support universities through the pandemic when traditional
on-site exams wasn't possible, this workshop will explore how designing
and using authentic assessment activities can engage students more
thoroughly. They argue that, undertaken systematically, these changes
don't need to be hugely time-consuming and can be more effective and
enjoyable for staff and students.

Participants will have opportunities within the session to:

. Discuss Assesment for Learning (AfL) principles, based on the
Northumbria AfL project;
. Consider how best to design fit-for-purpose assignments for your
programmes;
. Review examples of authentic assessment form diverse disciplines.
