Description
Aim of Session:
The aim of this session – which includes prior engagement with online
materials – is to support participants to develop best practice in PGR
supervision.

Outcomes and Benefits:
By the end of the session, participants can expect to:
• have greater awareness of what constitutes good supervisory practice/s
• have greater awareness of the responsibilities at Leeds of a PGR
supervisor
• be better equipped to ensure a positive PGR experience
• be aware of opportunities for continued development as a supervisor

Session Content:
Engaging prior to the session with online resources is intended to
minimise tutor input in the session itself and enhance opportunities for
discussion of a number of scenarios in order to interactively:
• explore what constitutes good PGR supervision, relative to the
University Code of Practice for Research Degree Candidatures
• consider the challenges of PGR supervision
• become familiar with the guidance and support available on campus for
PGRs and supervisors.

The session is led by tutors, typically including the Dean of the
Doctoral College; the Chair of Programmes and Quality Group (responsible
for the University’s policy and procedures for research degree
programmes); and colleagues from the various services supporting the
development of PGRs and supervisors.
