Aims:
This self-paced online course aims to equip you with the necessary
information to help you get started in teaching. It is aimed at
Postgraduates who are teaching, Staff new to teaching and Staff or PGRs
new to Leeds who want to teach. Please note you will need a Leeds
University login in order to sign up for this course, this will be
provided when you start at Leeds University.

This is a continuously available resource and places are unlimited, you
can sign up whenever it is convenient for you. Once you have signed up
you will be given access to the online course in Minerva.

FiT is a self-paced course so there is no time limit to complete it but
as a guide estimates on the time you may spend on reading core content
is (3 hours) and on optional activities and exploring related links (2-4
hours). As there are many different forms of teaching that you maybe
involved in such as demonstrating, tutorials, lectures and online how
long you choose to engage with each section may depend on the type of
teaching you are going to be undertaking. We also hope you will find it
useful to keep referring back to FiT as you develop your teaching
practice.

Outcomes:
On successful completion of this course, participants will be able
to:
• Recognise principles for effective teaching at the University of
Leeds
• Describe a range of techniques to plan and design teaching
sessions
• Consider how to adapt your teaching for online learning
• Identify effective approaches to providing feedback to students
• Reflect on how to support your students and your peers
• Deliver an inclusive learning experience

Next steps:
To support you further following this course you will be invited to sign
up for optional short interactive sessions on different aspects of
teaching. For example, sessions on designing a session plan - where you
can bring along your session plan and revise/reflect on it and gain
feedback. We hope that this will allow you to take in the information in
this course, apply it to your teaching practice and then give you the
opportunities to reflect on your practice and develop it further.

This course broadly aligns to Descriptor 1 of the UK Professional
Standards Framework. A breakdown of how it maps to the UKPSF can be
found in the ‘What next?’ section of the course.
Following completion of this course, and once you have 12 months
experience of teaching in higher education, participants will be able to
prepare an application for Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education
Academy.
