Description

Join colleagues from the University’s Lifelong Learning Centre to
explore some of the considerations, challenges and good practice in
supporting mature undergraduate students. This conversational and
interactive session is aimed at all staff and will offer a space
to develop and share some practical steps that you can take to support
mature undergraduates - no matter your role.

Aim:

To enable staff to support mature undergraduate students more
effectively and to explore how inclusive practices might apply to
working with mature students:

Outcomes:

•Explore the similarities and differences between a mature student and a
school leaver, their motivations for studying and some of the barriers
they face.
•Develop an understanding of the institutional picture around mature
students, including success and continuation data – perhaps busting a
few myths along the way!
•Hear what mature students have been telling us - consider how the
emerging themes inform your own practice?
•Reflect on some of the key challenges for mature students and think
through some practical solutions.
•Gain an understanding of the wider support, resources and initiatives
available to help students (and staff!)

The session will be led by staff from the University's Lifelong Learning
Centre: Lauren Huxley (Student Experience Officer), Laura Conroy
(Faculty Student Success Officer) and Paul Devlin (Student Support
Officer).

The Lifelong Learning Centre is both a multi-disciplinary School running
undergraduate courses, and a specialist service supporting mature and
part-time learners across the University. We deliver courses that
encourage and support student diversity, with a focus on students from
under-represented groups or who don't have traditional qualifications.
We also offer support to current and prospective mature, part-time and
Foundation level students, and apprentices.
