Description
Overall Aim of Course:
This workshop is the third in a series of 3 which aims to facilitate the
development of PGRs as academic/thesis writers, using the idea of the
academic/thesis writer as an ‘authority’.

For a full-time Phd, you would attend this course in year 3 or 4.

Pre-requisites:
None

Outcomes and Benefits:
Guidance will be included on writING development i.e. how to produce
better texts. However the emphasis is on participants exploring how the
writing of increasingly successful texts is bound up with developing the
identity and confidence (i.e. authority) of a writER.

So in this session you will:
• examine your current academic identity in relation to the
expectations on PGRs at this stage of study - in order to better
understand and meet the challenges;
• explore what demonstrating authority looks like as you finalise
the claim of your thesis - in order to better understand what you are
aiming for;
• investigate appropriate examples of ‘successful’ writing - in
order to identify features you can emulate in your own writing,
particularly in relation to sustaining a persuasive and coherent story
over the multiple chapters of a thesis;
• be made aware of strategies and resources to help you continue
developing independently as a writer.
