Description
Overall Aim of Course:
This workshop is the first in a series of 3 which aims to facilitate the
development of PGRs as academic/thesis writers, using the idea of the
academic/thesis writer as an ‘authority’.

For a full-time Phd, you would attend this course in year 1, pre-
Transfer; then "The Developing Thesis Writer" in year 2; then "The
Finishing Thesis Writer" in year 3.

Pre-requisites:
None.

Outcomes and Benefits:
Guidance will be included on writING development i.e. how to produce
better texts. However the emphasis is on participants exploring how the
writing of increasingly successful texts is bound up with developing the
identity and confidence (i.e. authority) of a writER.

So in this session you will:
• examine your current academic identity in relation to the
expectations on PGRs at this stage of study - in order to better
understand and meet the challenges;
• explore what demonstrating authority looks like in relation to a
Transfer report, particularly in terms of reviewing the literature -
in order to better understand what you are aiming for;
• investigate appropriate examples of ‘successful’ writing,
particularly in terms of structure and precision of language - in order
to identify features you can emulate in your own writing;
• be made aware of strategies and resources – in order to help you
continue developing independently as a writer.
