Description
Overall aim of the course:
Courageous conversations are those conversations that make us feel
uncomfortable yet we know we need to have, and ultimately will bring
about improvement.

Your ability to speak up about issues which are genuinely affecting you
can be crucial to your well-being, your relationships (in particular
with your supervisor) and your achievements. Developing the confidence
to initiate these kinds ofconversations now can provide you with the
ability to manage these conversations to produce positive outcomes for
the rest of your life.

Outcomes and benefits: Courageous conversations require thought and
preparation coupled with a skill to conduct the conversation in an non-
judgemental adult manner in which both parties feel they can be open and
honest.
Participants will have opportunity to practice a courageous conversation
using a given structure which they can use for any given difficult
situation.

The session will cover:
• Sharing experiences of having courageous conversations either as
initiator or recipient
• Reflecting on what stops us having them
• Considering our behavioural rights
• A model for conflict resolution
• How to construct an opening for a courageous conversation
• How to manage the dialogue
• and how to move to a successful conclusion

Format of the session:
This is a half day participative workshop. There will be a mix of tutor
input, individual and group tasks, discussion and opportunity for
reflection.

Tutor: Marcus Hill MSc, Fellow of Higher Education Academy.
