Description
Pre-requisites:
Participants are expected to have completed session one in the First
Steps programme: Stepping into Design and Planning, or else have
equivalent experience.
Preparotary work:
Participants will be asked to review material on principles of
curriculum design and theories of student learning, as these will not be
explicitly covered in the session.
Aims:
This workshop aims to prepare participants to deliver teaching sessions
which promote student learning. It will cover both presentational
techniques for large group teaching and facilitation skills for managing
small group teaching situations.
Outcomes:
On successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• compare and contrast the purpose of lectures and discussion-based
classes,
• identify a variety of teaching activities which promote active
learning,
• use a range of questioning and listening techniques to facilitate
student learning,
• respond to ‘difficult’ situations in group contexts and ensure that
students participate fully.
Content and format:
This workshop constitutes three hours of training. It is run as an
interactive session, modelling a range of activities that participants
may adopt in their own teaching practice. The workshop will cover the
following broad topics:
• The purpose of lectures
• Planning and delivering lectures and presentations
• Managing small group teaching
• Dealing with difficult situations
• Using technology to develop a blended approach
Next steps:
This is the second session in the First Steps series of introductory
learning and teaching workshops. Participants may wish to further
develop their professional practice in student education by attending
other workshops in the programme (it is advisable – but not compulsory –
to attend them in order). Subsequent to completion of the series, they
may consider applying for professional recognition of their teaching as
an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Mapping to the UKPSF:
The First Steps programme aligns to Descriptor 1 of the UK Professional
Standards Framework. In particular, this workshop relates to the Area of
Activity A2 (Teach and / or support learning). Once participants have a
minimum of 12 months’ experience of teaching and or supporting learning
in HE, they will be able to prepare an application for Associate
Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
