pre-course self-directed learning will be sent to participants when they
enrol on the event.
This session is delivered face to face on campus.
Participants may be new to sustainability or may have some experience of
embedding sustainability in practice. They are likely to be decision
makers who are able to take action on sustainability in their areas
following course completion. The course is suitable for people in
academic, operational and professional services roles across all
University departments.
During the course, participants will:
• Explore examples of sustainability in practice across different
departments at the University
• Discuss the importance of sustainability for the University and
for different teams
• Learn about how to support their teams and colleagues in embedding
sustainability
• Identify opportunities and barriers to embedding sustainable
practices and start to develop an action plan for working
collaboratively in their own areas
By the end of the course, participants will:
• Know where to access support and guidance on good practice around
sustainability
• Know how to join and contribute to the Sustainability Community
• Be able to identify challenges and opportunities to develop good
practice around sustainability across a range of relevant topics
• Understand their own strengths and attributes as managers or
leaders in terms of how to use these to take action on sustainability
and support their colleagues
The course is delivered in two parts. Part 1, invites participants to
explore the fundamentals of sustainability and how it is applied at
Leeds through a number of online case studies. This part of the course
is online self-directed learning and reflection.
Part 2 is a 2 hr workshop session, which focuses on what the
learning means for participants own roles as a managers, discussing
challenges and opportunities and offering opportunities for
collaboration.
Course tutor: Dr Claire Bastin is co-founder and Director of Nifty
Sustainability, a social enterprise whose core purpose is to support
people and organisations by helping them embed good practice on eco and
social sustainability. Nifty offers consultancy and research,
education, training and experiential learning, as well as helping
organisations to monitor and assess their impacts and resilience in
meaningful ways. Prior to establishing Nifty, Claire held a number of
roles at the University of Leeds including as a lecturer in the
Sustainability Research Institute and senior leadership roles in the
Sustainability Service as Sustainability Manager where she managed
projects under the Being a Positive Partner in Society and Knowledge and
Capacity Building strategic themes, including developing a suite of
sustainability training for staff.
Course Tutor: Jane Dickinson is the manager of the Engagement Team in
the Sustainability Service. Her role involves supporting staff and
students to embed and engage with sustainability and with particular
focus on developing the sustainability knowledge and capacity of all
staff at the University. She also ensures we are collaborating with city
partners and external stakeholders to be a positive partner to society.
Jane has substantial experience of working in the Education sector,
firstly as a Geography teacher, followed by management at a nationwide
educational charity, before joining the Educational Engagement team at
the University of Leeds in 2019. Here she implemented a range of
programmes and projects aimed at increasing the number under-represented
groups accessing university courses within the Faculty of Environment.
She moved to the Sustainability Service in 2023, initially as Programme
Officer for Living Labs, before becoming service manager for the
Engagement team.
