Description
Course Outcomes and Benefits from Attending:

•To consider the essential skills required for supporting
students, such as handling sensitive discussions, managing boundaries,
active listening and questioning techniques

•To use DVD case material to promote discussion about appropriate
responses to various situations that may arise

• To familiarise participants with the range of student support
services available in the University and the process of referring
students to those services

• To look at how we support students who present with 'risk'

Course Content:
This course will include consideration of the role of a Student Support
Officer and how to carry it out effectively through Managing Boundaries
such as time boundaries, managing and structuring meetings, setting
ground rules and confidentiality. It will also look at practical
communication skills such as active listening skills, encouraging talk
and starting and ending difficult conversations.

There are no pre-requisites for this course.
