Description
WHEN TO TAKE THIS COURSE:
We recommend that you take this course during your second year of PhD
and when you have collected data to store in Excel.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Throughout this course you will learn some of the commonly used
fundamental techniques within Excel. This course is the first in the
series for Excel and provides a good base knowledge for participants who
wish to progress to the next Excel courses.

COURSE FORMAT:
The course is hands-on with a tutor leading you through each of the
processes. Practice exercises and tasks are included in the session to
help you master the fundamental features of Excel.

Windows 10 & Excel 2016 for PC are used throughout the course.

PREREQUISITES
Participants should be familiar with the Excel interface (Ribbon,
Quick Access Toolbar, Formula bar etc.) and possess a basic knowledge of
Excel. Before attending this course you should be able to complete the
following tasks:

• Open, save and close Excel files
• Select cells, columns & rows
• Insert/delete cells, columns, rows, or worksheets
• Enter, Edit, delete & Format data
• Move or copy data to other worksheets
• Amend column width and row height
• Use Autofill and the various Autofill options
• Create a simple formula which will add, subtract, multiply or
divide


You will be required to use these skills throughout the Fundamentals
session and if you are unable to perform these techniques, you may be
asked to leave the course and complete the beginners course to bring
your skills up to speed.

CONTENT
• Perform calculations using basing functions (e.g. SUM, AVERAGE)
• Create formulas using relative and absolute references
• Naming Cells and using named ranges
• Create and modify different types of chart
• Organise data by listing in alphabetical or numerical order
• Extract subsets of data using criteria
• Keep column and row titles visible at all times whilst scrolling
