Aim of Training:
The aim of the course is to prepare the internal examiners of research
degrees at Leeds for, and give them confidence in, the role. Graduate
Board requires all internal examiners of research degrees to undergo
such training which is part of the University’s quality assurance
processes. The training of the internal examiner removes the need for an
independent chair.
The training helps to ensure the quality and standard of Leeds research
degrees is upheld. This includes making sure that: the internal is clear
about their equality with the external; the viva process is fair for all
students, consistent across the university and challenging.
Session outcomes:
By the end of this course participants will be better able to: list the
responsibilities of an internal examiner of a research degree at Leeds;
describe the requirements for reporting the outcome of a research degree
examination; implement University policies and procedures relating to
the examination of research degrees.
Session content:
The course covers the role and responsibilities of the internal examiner
in line with University policy and procedures for research degree
examination. The course considers the role of the internal examiner
during the following examination phases: examination entry, including
the appointment of examiners; arranging the viva; considering the thesis
before the viva, including the completion of preliminary reports;
planning the questioning in the viva; the viva itself; selecting an
appropriate outcome; completing the examiners’ report. The course also
considers issues that may be faced by an internal examiner.
Learning Method:
The course is delivered through tutor presentation and tutor lead
discussion around a set of case studies covering the phases of research
degree examination.
Tutors:
The course is delivered by members of Graduate Board’s Examinations
Group. This group is responsible for policy and procedures and
appointing examiners.
