Description

This workshop is designed for students who are starting research
degrees. Because there are a variety of types of research degrees, which
can be studied in a variety of ways (FT / PT / Split Site) and in a
variety of disciplines, you should consult your Postgraduate Research
Tutor about which Starting Your Research Degree course would be most
applicable to you.

Generally, these workshops aim to provide students with a framework for
starting a research degree and progressing satisfactorily through the
early stages. It will address the following issues:

• Reviewing what is a research degree actually is
• Practicalities of doing a research degree at Leeds
• Working with your supervisor
• Planning and time management
• Monitoring progress
• Gathering and managing information

The workshop will involve a mixture of input from the tutor and
discussion in small groups and plenary. The last part will be a panel
discussion during which you will be able to put questions to a small
group comprising representatives from different academic services, the
Research Degrees Office and others.

The workshop will provide an opportunity for you to meet other new
research students in similar disciplines, to work with these other
students to explore some of the skills needed for effective research
study and to discuss some of the issues involved. We hope the workshop
will provide a useful and enjoyable foundation to your studies.
