Description

Overall aim of the course
The aim of this workshop is to assist participants in considering the
research student/supervisor relationship and to help them explore how to
manage this relationship most effectively.

Outcomes and benefits
By the end of this workshop participants will be better able to:
• explain the responsibilities of a research student supervisor and a
research student;
• evaluate the nature of their relationship with their supervisor;
• formulate approaches to developing and maintain an effective
professional working relationship with their supervisors and others.

The session will cover
The session will cover expectations students have of supervisors,
supervisors have of students and the University has of both; challenges
faced by students in working with their supervisors; approaches and
frameworks for structuring and managing student-supervisor interactions
and relationships that might be used to build an effective working
student-supervisor relationship and address challenges in the
relationship.

Format of the session
The workshop is delivered through tutor presentation and group and tutor
lead plenary discussion.

Prerequisites
None

Tutor
Dr Jim Baxter leads staff and research student development in the areas
of research and innovation in SDDU. He is also responsible for research
student supervisor and internal examiner training. Jim came to his
current role from a lectureship in Mechanical Engineering where his
research and teaching interests were in engineering design and he
collaborated with organisations such as Rolls Royce plc, the Boeing
Company, BAE Systems and the Airbus consortium. During this time Jim
supervised research students. Before coming to research Jim gained
experience as a practising engineer.
