This course is suitable for staff working with undergraduate and/or
postgraduate students (taught and research) who want to know more about
mental health and wellbeing issues affecting students.

Description
Please note that this course will be delivered as two 3-hour
sessions, on the afternoons of 18th and 24th May. Both sessions should
be attended. Please do not book a place on either session if you are
unable to commit to both.


Pre-Work Requirement
To send in advance an anonymous real life case study of a student in
crisis/ distress, if you have one.

Overall Aim of the Course
This training aims to provide a basic overview of mental health and
wellbeing issues affecting students within the University. It will also
help to build your confidence, knowledge and skills so that you can
provide the initial support to a student in crisis/ distress.

Intended Outcomes and Benefits from Attending
• You will gain an understanding of the differences between mental
health and mental ill health
• A greater understanding of mental health matters
• A greater understanding of the impact of a mental health
difficulty on an individual/ student including; stigma, discrimination,
support, recovery and the indicators of deteriorating mental ill health
• A personal and student focused understanding of the importance
of positive mental wellbeing
• Knowledge and skills surrounding the role we all play in
supporting a student/ individual in crisis/ distress – how to respond
and gain help
• A greater understanding of the boundaries of your role and the
role of the MHT

• Being mentally healthy ‘Our own wellbeing’;
• Mental Ill Health ‘The impact’;
• What we need to consider ‘Responding to a crisis’;

Learning and Teaching Methods
The training will be a mixture of presentations, group work and case
studies which will help you understand how to put the knowledge and
skills into practice

Tutor
Jeanette Hannah is the University’s Mental Health Advisor, based in the
Equality Service. Prior to this Jeanette was the manager of a PCT
commissioned mental health service working with individuals diagnosed
with severe and enduring mental health difficulties in getting them back
into employment or education. Previously Jeanette also worked in the
Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust in the Crisis
Resolution and Home Treatment Team.
