Description
Overall aim of course:
The aim of this course is to increase awareness of the University’s
processes for taught student and postgraduate researcher academic
appeals (these are amalgamated into one process from 2017-2018); to
enable staff to identify problems a student may be having and to address
them before circumstances arise which might lead to an appeal; and to
provide details of the sources of guidance and support available to
staff when dealing with such cases.

Intended outcomes and benefits:
As a result of this course participants will better understand how
academic appeals are dealt with by the University and be better equipped
to identify and handle any issues that arise in their area of work which
could potential give rise to an appeal. They will also have the
opportunity to share experiences and identify sources of support and
guidance for dealing with student-related issues.

Content:
- An overview of the Academic Appeals Procedure - The relationship
between complaints and appeals
- Issues which give rise to appeals and if anything can be done to "head
them off at the pass"

Pre-requisites/requirements/prior knowledge:
Participants may wish to identify and bring to the workshop any knotty
student issues that they might have encountered (or are currently
facing!) for discussion.

Learning and teaching methods
The course will include a brief presentation on the appeals processes
followed by a discussion of case studies of selected appeals dealt with
by the Student Cases team.

Tutor(s):
Cheryl Cox, Catherine Cho and Rebecca Dearden are part of the Student
Cases team. All of them have significant experience of dealing with
appeals and complaints. In particular, they oversee the operation of
the Academic Appeals Procedure and the Student Complaints Procedure.
They also frequently provide advice and guidance to staff at all levels
on ways to deal with and resolve concerns and issues that arise in their
schools and services.
