Description
Aim of Training:

The aim of this course is to help PGR supervisors develop best practice
in PGR supervision. Graduate Board requires all PGR supervisors to
undertake such training before they act in the
role. This is in line with the Quality Assurance Agency’s (QAA’s)
expectations.

Session outcomes:

By the end of this course participants will be better able to: describe
the role of a good supervisor; list the responsibilities of a PGR
supervisor at Leeds; provide an excellent PGR experience.

Session content:

The course will consider a model for good PGR supervision and situate
this relative to the University Code of Practice for Research Degree
Candidatures. The course will consider the challenges of PGR
supervision and provide guidance on the support for PGRs and
their supervisors.

Learning Method:

The course is active in nature with participants developing models of
good PGR supervision and discussion of PRG scenarios. There is also some
tutor presentation.

Tutors:
The course is led by academic tutors who are typically the Dean of
Postgraduate Research Studies, Faculty Director of Postgraduate Research
Studies or the chair of Graduate Board’s Programmes of Study and Audit
Group (PSAG). PSAG is responsible for the University’s policy and
procedures for research degree programmes. Contributions are also made
by services supporting PGRs and their supervisors.

Allied with this course is a separate Role of the Internal Examiner
course which covers in detail the process of research degree
examination.
