Overall aim of course
The workshop is for postgraduate researchers who are interested in
exploring further the philosophical and methodological principles of the
scientific method and in applying the ideas to research projects. The
aim of this workshop is to explore perspectives on what is core to any
researcher in terms of how they carry out their research and how that
impacts on the research we all do on a day to day basis. Do we all have
principles in common in our research approach regardless of our subject
area? Do we work in a ‘scientific’ way. What is the ‘scientific method’?
And what is not?

Outcomes and benefits
Understanding perspectives on the philosophical basis for ‘scientific
method’ in research can underpin and guide a researcher’s methodological
approach. This philosophical underpinning can give you confidence in
your approach to research, support clarity of thinking and give you
confidence in your findings and what you say about those findings

The session will cover:
• What defines the scientific method?
• Key ideas from e.g. Bacon, Descartes, Popper, Kuhn etc.
• Deductive and Inductive reasoning
• Types and characteristics of research
• Criteria by which research is judged
• Applying the principles of scientific methodology
Please note, the workshop DOES NOT cover subject specific methods of
research.

Format of the session

The session will include group work, discussion and presentations
