Pre work: some pre reading

Overall aim of workshop: The aim of this workshop is to provide
participants with an opportunity to explore the strategic thinking and
planning process. This will enable you to understand the environment you
are working in and allow you to make more focused decisions and take the
most appropriate actions to generate better results.

Intended outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participants will have:

Explored the benefits of using the strategic planning process of
analysis, choice and implementation; Identified critical measures of
strategic success using a balanced scorecard approach; Determined how to
focus on the key activities you must excel in doing in order to support
those measures of success

Indicative content: The University has a strategy do you also need one
for your work area? How do you go about formulating, implementing and
communicating a strategy for your work area? Is strategic thinking an
individual or a collective process? The workshop includes

Visioning the future – analysis of the current situation and planning
for a sustainable future
Making strategic choices and subsequent implementation plans
Using scenario planning to help make effective strategic choices
Ways of thinking strategically rather than operationally
Ways of engaging people with your strategy
