Suitability
Postgraduates, Research Staff who teach and other Part-time Teachers
(from any discipline) who have some experience of teaching and who have
an interest in further developing their teaching skills and gaining
greater understanding of their role and responsibilities as a HE
teacher. It is expected that participants will have attended one or
more of: Learning and Teaching in Tutorials, Seminars, Problems Classes
and Workshops; Assessing Students Work; Laboratories and Practical
Classes; Learning and Teaching in Lectures. By booking you are
indicating that you are available to attend the full session. Please
note that if you arrive late or leave part way through the session your
attendance may be disregarded. If the workshop is FULL, then please

Description
Aim: The nature of the student population is diverse. Leeds has
a responsibility to provide an educational environment that meets the
learning support needs of all students, and provide equal opportunities
for all students to develop to their full potential.

Outcomes: At the end of the workshop, participants will be better
able to:
•Discuss the diverse nature of the student population in Leeds
•Work within the legal obligations of the University of Leeds and
individual teachers to provide equal opportunities for all students
• Consider the impact of diversity on learning and teaching and on
learner support requirements
•Design inclusive teaching and assessment processes to support student
engagement
Content: The workshop is run as an interactive small group session using
a variety of activities and providing materials and links to resources
to support participants to recognise diversity and support student
engagement at the University.

Tutor: Rebecca Dearden is a Senior Academic Staff Development Officer
in the Learning and Teaching team of SDDU. Rebecca has a legal
background and has extensive teaching experience in academic, vocational
and professional education in both the private sector and HE. Rebecca
is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the
Staff and
Educational Development Association, and has a MA in Lifelong Learning
from the University of Leeds.
