Description
Pre requisites: None

Pre work: some pre reading and completed an on line conflict management
questionnaire (Thomas-Kilmann Inventory)

Overall aim of workshop: Aim of Workshop: According to recent research
by OPP* 85% of employees have had to deal with conflict in the workplace
to some degree and the average employee spends 2.1 hours per week
dealing with issues around dealing with conflict. Based on the number of
people employed in the UK this translates to 370 million working days
potentially lost per year as a result of conflict in the workplace.
Handling difficult situations can be one of the most stressful aspects
of managing in a modern working environment. Understanding people’s
different thinking styles, values and motives including your own and the
possible reasons why people behave as they do can help you adopt more
effective tactics to handle sources of conflict if and when it arises.
This workshop will give participants the opportunity to develop a
toolkit to diagnose and understand difficult situations and to increase
their flexibility and options when encountering potential areas of
conflict or tension. * OPP is one of Europe’s leading business
psychology firms

Intended outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participants will have:
Discovered and understood their personal reactions to conflict; Explored
the underlying reasons for conflict; Explored different techniques to
counter conflict; learnt how to harness conflict to their advantage and
enhanced their influencing skills.

Indicative content: Why conflict and difficult situations arise in the
context of different Thinking Styles; Participants own reactions to
conflict and learnt strategies to increase their flexibility when
dealing with difficult situations using the Thomas-Kilmann conflict
profile; Boosting confidence when faced with conflict and difficult
situations; Refining influencing skills to diffuse sources of conflict;
Importance of communication in managing peoples’ reactions to situations
