Description
Overall aim of course
The aim of this session is to help you get your work published – and to
do so as successfully as possible by helping you to feel well informed
and confident in dealing with editors and to make the most of the
publishing opportunities afforded by your work.
Outcomes and benefits
The business of getting published is central to academic life. The
phrase “publish or perish” has become well known. Certainly,
publications are important to the success of your school, department, or
research centre – and to your own career development.
Participants will have a better understanding of the processes involved
in publishing research. They will also have the opportunity to speak
with and learn from an academic editor with extensive publishing
experience.
Session Content
The session will cover publishing in journal articles, books, and other
forms of publications. Typical questions discussed are how to:
•discover opportunities and design a personal strategy for publishing
•decide which journals to target
•maximise your chances of acceptance with those journals
•understand the typical reasons behind acceptance (or rejection)
•decide which book publishers to approach
•write a book proposal
•use the peer review process to your advantage
•work with editors and publishers during the publication process (and
negotiate your contract)
•build an authorial career
During the session you will also be given examples of practical
resources to help you get published. We’ll finish the session with a
list of “dos” and “don’ts”.
Format of the session
This one day session will be a mix of group work, presentation and
discussion.
