Aim:
To introduce researchers to relevant leadership concepts, provide an
opportunity to meet and discuss leadership issues with other research
leaders
Objectives:
By the end of this 3 hr event those attending will:
• Have had chance to listen to a research leader giving their
perspectives of leadership
• Have been given ideas about leadership for them to follow up on
• Have met other researchers and been given the opportunity to

• The unique differences of leading in a research environment
• Difference between ‘leading research’ and ‘leading people’
• An introduction to leadership resources e.g. Vitae booklets “The
leading researcher”
• Signposting to further developmental options
Format of the session
The workshop involves a combination of instruction, discussion and
interactive group work.

Tutor
Odette Dewhurst is a Senior Research Training and
Development Officer in SDDU and works in the area of research and
academic staff development across the University of Leeds. She has
previously been a researcher in a number of universities, including here
at the University of Leeds and her main area of expertise is research
funding, supporting researchers applying for grants and fellowships
from UK funding bodies. In addition to research funding, Odette is the
programme manager for a range of programmes for research and academic
staff on areas including leadership for research staff, writing research
for publication and support for those new to the role of Principal
Investigator.
Marcus Hill is a Senior Staff Development Adviser in
SDDU. He has previously held a number of senior training and development
roles within industry. He has also led a business development team at a
College of FE and designed and delivered organisational development
projects as well as personal and professional development workshops. He
has completed a post graduate diploma in Training Management and is an
authorised facilitator of the Margerison-McCann Team Management Profile
and Quintax Personality Profile.
