Suitability
This workshop is most suitable for students in their first year of
doctoral study who would like basic guidance on making their writing
more effective. It is a useful course for students who are native
speakers of English, but is designed primarily to support students with
English as a second or additional language.

Description
The workshop is in two sections. The first part explores some specific
features of academic writing style such as register, coherence,
coherence and explicitness. The second part considers broader issues of
research writing such as voice, authority and subjectivity/objectivity.
There is some formal tutor input, but the session is mainly organised as
a workshop where participants work through examples and discuss their
ideas in groups.
Katherine Taylor is a Teaching Fellow in the Language Centre. She had
been teaching international students for over twenty years. She is now
mainly engaged in supporting postgraduate students from a wide range of
disciplines on both pre-sessional and in-sessional courses for English
and academic study skills. She is particularly interested in issues
around transition between different levels of study and in facilitating
the development of writing skills.
* Users of English as a second or foreign language who wish to improve
their general command of written English are advised to attend one of
the Language Centre's 3-day academic writing courses normally held
during the Christmas and Easter vacations.
